2 Muscle Building Secrets Guaranteed to Add Muscle Mass!

Building muscle mass is much easier to do when you are armed with the correct information. With the correct information, you'll build muscle mass faster than you thought possible.

If you're frustrated with your muscle gain or fat loss goals, I sympathize with you completely, and understand exactly what you are going through. I worked out for years before finally figuring out the correct ways to go about building muscles and losing fat.

I finally figured out that the routines and weight lifting tips touted by professional bodybuilders and the muscle magazines just aren't going to work for most people. But take heart, you can start building muscle with effective weight training routines and nutrition programs.

Following are a couple of weight lifting tips that I?ve found to be extremely effective in building muscle and adding strength as quickly as possible. Putting together a program that incorporates the following weightlifting tips will point you in the right direction and get you making gains you hadn't thought were possible.

Building Muscle Tip #1 - An Intense Twist

Arthur Jones, inventor of Nautilus, pioneered the concept of training with 100% intensity, ie, training to failure. And this is an extremely important part of your routine if you are interested in building muscles as quickly as possible.

However, as others caught on toe Arthur?s effective training ideas and the training to failure concept became more widespread, an important piece of advice by Arthur was forgotten. Arthur suggested that people go beyond failure.

And I?m not talking about some of the more popular high intensity techniques available today such as rest-pause, forced reps, drop sets, etc. I?m talking about a very specific way of training to failure that is very effective for building muscle mass.

Arthur Jones suggested that once you could no longer complete another repetition, you should continue pushing or pulling on the weight for approximately another 20 seconds. Obviously, on certain exercises like squats or bench presses, you either need to work in a power rack with safety pins or have a very good spotter.

Let?s use the bench press as an example of how to use this bodybuilding technique for building muscles. Most people, when they start a rep and get stuck near the bottom, they drop the weight against the safety pins or have their spotter help rack it. Instead, you should continue pushing against that immovable weight for a good twenty seconds.

On barbell curls, you would most likely come to a grinding halt about two or three inches into the rep, when your arms are slightly bent. You know you won?t make the rep but you continue to pull on the bar for as long as you can before finishing the set.

Muscle Building Tip #2 - Squat, Squat, Squat

You have to fall in love with the squat. It truly is the king of all muscle building exercises, bar none. While some people can build muscle mass on almost any training routine or diet, most of us can?t. So put as many factors in your favor as you can control and one of the biggest is work hard on an effective squat program.

Hard work on the squat is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your bodybuilding success. Forget about the latest greatest high tech routine or the newest supplement fad.

The key component to any program you do is hard work. Building muscle isn?t easy. But it can be made easier. Hard work will take you much further than your choice of exercises, sets or reps.

But if you get the other components of your training program put together correctly and then add hard work and dedication, you?ll be absolutely amazed at the progress you can make. You?ll be building muscle so fast, you?ll go from a before to an after before you know it.

You need to use all the weight you can handle and then add some more. Since the squat is the toughest weight lifting exercise you can do physically, it's also the toughest mentally.

Your mind gives in on the squat well before your body does. If you want to gain lots of muscle, you need to put an end to that. Everything you have has to go into your squatting program.

The key to the success of rapid weight gain by squatting is the amount of work you put into it. After your warm ups, load the bar to a weight you normally do 10 reps with. Now, do 20 reps. No, I'm not kidding. Like I said before, the squat is the most mental exercise there is. I've never seen anyone, when properly prepared mentally, fail to get 20 reps with their 10 rep weight.

These bodybuilding tips are very effective tips for building muscle and getting stronger. Add them to your weight training program and watch your muscle mass increase.

Keep in mind that weightlifting workouts like this are the best way for effectively building muscle mass fast but it's also the best way to lose fat, completely change the shape of your body, and keep the fat off. Weight lifting is much more effective for fat loss than aerobics or dieting alone.

Best Abdominal Exercise and Tips

We have seen all of those infomercials and magazine ads that promote their best abdominal exercise routines and then promise you that you will have sexy abs in just a few short workouts. Then they further insult our intellegence by trying to convince us by showing us their before and after photos.

These ads should make you shake your head in disgust! There really are no magical ab workouts, spot reducing (you can't pick areas that you would like to trim down), or crazy machines that will give you those washboard abs. The amazing fact I believe about all of these ads is - they never talk about dieting! Hard work and dieting is the only real way to lose that thick layer of fat and reveal some spectactular abs!

The best abdominal exercise is really a pretty simple and successful one - crunches and reverse crunches, that's it! Work your abs 2-3 times per week. The abdominals are no different than working out any other part of your body. Training them more than two or three times a week will not give the muscles proper time to repair themselves.

What you really need to do when performing these two exercises is, concentrate on contracting your abdominal muscles as tight as you can. I like contracting for a count of three. This will causes your abs to fatigue faster. Don't worry about how many reps you do, concentrate on contracting your abdominal muscles. I believe crunches and reverse crunches are the best abdomial exercise routines you can perform. If you do not like getting on the floor to do these exercises I can recommend the ab lounge. This chair will give you the range of motion needed allowing you to contract and expand those pesky ab muscles. Oh yeah - don't forget to reduce those calories if you want all of that hard work to pay off!

Please visit Ultimate Fitness Equipment for all of your fitness needs. If you are interested on more information regarding the Ab Lounge Chair please do so.

Nutrition and Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of malignant cancer that mostly affects individuals who have worked in jobs associated with asbestos. Breathing in asbestos dust is the main cause of mesothelioma, a person who has worked in an environment for as little as one to two months where they were exposed to asbestos dust could result in them contracting the disease 30 to 40 years later. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumour of the membrane lining of the chest cavity called the pleura or the abdomen called the peritoneum. The symptoms of Mesothelioma are typically chest pain, shortness of breath and a persistent cough but these symptoms are similar to other condition so a visit to the doctor is vital.

As with most cancers, along side traditional treatment changing your diet can help. Increase soy beans products in your diet, the alpha carotene and lycopene in soy help to revert and reduce tumour growth and metastasis. Other anti-cancer foods that should be plentiful in your diet are cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, broccoli, pears, citrus fruits, turmeric, tomatoes, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, green tea, walnuts, spinach, wheat bran, rice bran, rosemary, garlic, thyme, oregano and onions. These foods should be organic. Cut down on meat (especially grilled or barbecued) and dairy food consumption, pickled food, smoked food, alcohol, saturated fats, salt, sun exposure and smoking.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from Mesothelioma.

? Plantar Hyperhidrosis when there is excessive sweating in feet.

Although no exact cause of this excessive sweating in specific individuals is known. But Sympathetic nervous system can help to control sweating.

The human body has two different sets of nerves: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic system. The somatic nervous system is the system of voluntary nerves that is responsible for giving us sensation and control of our muscles, which help us to move the different portions of our body. On other hand, the autonomic nervous system is the involuntary nervous system. Our numerous body functions occur without conscious control like speed of breathing, beating of heart and production of sweat. The sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems are two components of the autonomic nervous system. The job of the sympathetic nervous system is to control the sweating throughout our bodies.

Hyperhidrosis patient have excessive sweating that hamper their daily living activities. Sometimes stress, emotion, or exercise leads to high perspiration, but can also occur because of impulsiveness.

Palmar Hyperhidrosis patients have sweaty, moist hands in such condition they are not comfortable with grasping objects or even shy while handshaking with others.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis causes to stain cloths of patient shortly after they dress.

Chronic Headaches and Pain Often Can Be Eliminated By A Special Dentist

DENVER ? Sometimes as Freud once said a good cigar is just a smoke. A headache, on the other hand, occasionally can be a sign of something much more serious than just a headache.

This is particularly true if it is accompanied by facial pain, neck and shoulder pain, tinnitus or ringing in the ears and unexplained loose teeth. These symptoms, along with jaw pain, limited jaw movement or locking jaw, numbness in the fingers and arms, worn or cracked teeth and clicking or popping in the jaw joints can be signs that a person has the condition called temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ. The condition occurs when the teeth, facial muscles and temporomandibular joints are out of alignment.

Fortunately, neuromuscular dentistry can help alleviate symptoms such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain, jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw and tinnitus ? another name for ringing in the ears. A neuromuscular dentist may be able to help if you are suffering from any of the above symptoms or a number of other symptoms. In a number of cases, these symptoms can actually be attributed to TMJ, also referred to as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) or MPD (myofascial pain disorder). The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI) is considered by many to be the world leader in training neuromuscular dentists. Neuromuscular dentists trained there are specially trained to recognize signs of TMJ, a disorder that is commonly passed by or misdiagnosed, and to provide the most appropriate care for the individual patient.

Located in Las Vegas, NV, the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies was founded in 1995. To learn more about the Institute and TMJ, visit the Web site at www.leadingdentists.com

Invisible Killers

Our bodies have a variety of mechanisms for dealing with this toxicity, but the current total load exceeds the body?s ability to adapt. When our bodies fail to break down or remove these toxins, the only other way to deal with them is through sequestration. The body will try to deposit these compounds into tissue to minimize their potential damage. For example, lead may be sequestered into bone, displacing calcium and increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

The overall load of these toxins is sometimes called our ?Body Burden?. A high body burden has been implicated in: Immunotoxicity ? leading to asthma, allergies, cancers and chronic disease; Neurotoxicity ? leading to cognition impairment, memory loss as well as sensory and motor dysfunction; and Endocrine toxicity ? leading to reproductive issues, loss of libido and metabolic impairment. For more information see: www.bodyburden.org

In research published in 2005, New York University School of Medicine researchers provided some of the most compelling evidence yet that long-term exposure to air pollution?even at levels within federal standards?causes heart disease. Previous studies have linked air pollution to cardiovascular disease but until now it was poorly understood how pollution damaged the body?s blood vessels

There are now 1460 metric tons of airborne toxins that travel on the jet stream around the world. Because of this, there is no place on the planet that can be considered a pristine environment. Facilities in the United States released 4.7 Billion pounds of toxins into the air in 2005? 72 Million pounds are known carcinogens.

In 2005 the city of Chicago experienced 68 days when the air quality was too unhealthy for children, elderly and the ill. Coal-fired power plants spew sulfates, nitrates and mercury into the air. These compounds have been linked to more than 20,000 premature deaths each year.

There are an estimated 7 Million illnesses and 1000 deaths each year in the United States from waterborne microbes. Chlorinated chemicals in drinking water have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer. Cyanobacterial toxins in municipal water have been linked to illness and disease worldwide. Sewage treatment plant workers are at much higher risk of respiratory illness, skin rashes, headaches and body aches.

Environmental toxins work their way into the food chain. As of late 2005, 47 states have advisories to limit intake of freshwater fish due to mercury contamination. In 2005, the FDA reported finding chlorinated pesticides, like DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene ? a breakdown product of DDT), in 63% of foods surveyed. Pesticides and Herbicides in food have been linked to many cancers.

The most surprising thing about our body burden is that we are at risk even before we are born. A study conducted in 2005 by the Environmental Working Group in cooperation with the American Red Cross examined the umbilical cord blood of newborns.

They found that the average newborn has 200 different industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides in their blood. These included over 70 known carcinogens (toxins that may cause cancer). Other studies have found high levels of the metals cadmium and mercury in the breast milk of nursing mothers

. As we grow up, we are exposed to seemingly benign compounds that are even meant to benefit us, but have been shown to have long-term negative consequences. For example, Fluoride in our drinking water has been linked to Osteosarcoma and Hypothyroidism. Additionally, vaccinations which undoubtedly prevent disease may contain the mercury compound Thimerosal which has been linked to the rise of autism in children.

What can be done? We need to look at both prevention of toxicity and dealing with the inherent rise in body burden that has occurred since birth. A healthy diet high in raw foods has been shown to be beneficial. Of course, make sure that you wash these foods to remove pesticides and herbicides that cling to the surface of fruits and vegetables.

Air purifiers may remove particulate matter and lower your exposure to some of the airborne toxins. Lastly, avoid seafood which has been shown to have higher mercury levels ? like tuna steak, marlin and sea bass.

Aside from limiting our exposure, we should all be actively aiding our bodies in the elimination of these toxins. Most programs for systemic detoxification begin in the digestive tract with products that act either as laxatives or diuretics. These include the ubiquitous colon cleanse products. By helping our bodies to remove waste quickly, it may aid in lowering body burden over time.

A more direct method for removing these compounds is chelation therapy for the removal of heavy metals and other toxins. Classic chelation causes side effects (kidney, bladder, etc..) and may not be well-tolerated in some people.

The newest research centers on the use of a colloidal suspension of the mineral zeolite ?clinoptilolite? in such products as Natural Cellular Defense. The activated zeolite attracts and traps small, highly-charged particles that fit into the pores and channels of the zeolite cage. This includes heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, etc..), nitrosamines and environmental pollutants.

Understand that this is a passive process ? when the zeolite is in close proximity to these compounds, they will be drawn to the zeolite and either absorbed into the cage or adsorbed onto the surface of the zeolite. Once trapped by the zeolite, these toxins are easily removed from the body. This particular activated zeolite has been the center of several clinical studies that will be published over the next few years. For more information see: www.detoxsmart.com

Weight Loss How Too Lose Weight Once And For All

Losing weight is more to do with the mind than it does to do with exercise and diet. Don?t get me wrong on this but when the inside is balanced the outside will be balanced as well.

What do I mean by this? Well although you are human on the outside on the inside is your spirit side. If the spirit part of you is not healthy then it will show on your outside. If you have any unhealed emotional issues and have a belief that you are unlovable, that you don?t deserve health and abundance it will reflect in your everyday life.

When you reach for food when you are not hungry you are doing it for emotional reasons. If you don?t stop and ask yourself why you are doing it then you will never stop doing it.

The next time you sit down and feel like stuffing your face ask yourself why? Or better still ask yourself what is the emotional issues I need to heal so I stop doing this. When your soul is healed you will believe you deserve health and abundance and will take the necessary steps to ensure this.

If you don?t heal the emotions you will keep this unhealthy cycle going and will never come out of denial and admit that there is a more emotional reason why you are doing it.

How do you do this? Meditation is a great way to do this. When you are about to put food in your mouth when you are not hungry, stop go to a quiet room close your eyes and feel what feeling is in your body. If you are angry feel what anger feels like in your body? Then ask yourself what feeling is under that. There is always another feeling under that feeling. Whether it be hurt, sad, depressed or whatever, there is always a feeling you have been clinging to which is surrounding you heart. While doing this a trauma, event or people may come to mind. This is the issue that you need to heal. It is a good idea to stay with the issue and resolve it with the people that have come to mind. Express the feelings that needed to be expressed at the time this event occurred. Do that while sitting there and ensure that at the end of the conversation with them there is forgiveness. Visualize them being in your head.

Underneath all these emotions is your true self. You may have a sense of going done a hole, that you are in everything, that you are consciousness itself or that you are love itself. The experience may be different for you but whatever you experience this is the core of you.

When you have healed the emotions you will have no need to overeat as you will have resolved the issue which was causing it. You will have let go of the feelings you were holding onto. The need to overeat will have come to a closure as the feelings have been healed. The cycle has come to an end.

As you gain more self love it is then a good time to look at diet and exercise but until you heal the emotions the cycle of overeating, dieting, overeating, dieting etc will continue. You have to go inside to heal what is outside, food will not do that for you.

Countries Unite Against Bird Flu

The people of the world are so scared right now of the threat of the H5N1 strain. The focus of the world seems to have transferred from terrorism to bird flu.

If the H5N1 strain mutates and joins with a human virus, the situation will become worse. This is because the transmission rate from one person to another will become a possibility. Then the spread rate will become faster and causing a whole lot of people to get infected.

The severe effects of the virus will eventually lead the victim to have lung damage. The affected person will have lungs filled with water and causing complications with breathing problems. Eventually, death follows. This all happens within the span of a few days.

That scary situation has been a major concern and has caused bird flu experts to meet in Beijing. They are worried about the 80 deaths that have occurred since 2003. They are also worried about the spread of the disease on Europe, Middle East and currently Africa. They have a great concern about the disease in Africa, because the experts feel the outbreak might start at Africa.

The World Bank is hoping that the meeting held would be able to raise at least $1.2 billion dollars. This money is to be used for health improvement and added veterinary services for developing countries struggling with the virus. The budget also aims to help surveillance of countries that have potential to develop the virus.

The disease started out at East Asia but is concern is growing because it is going westward.

The $1.2-1.4 billion dollars will be just enough to prepare in case an outbreak occurs. That money still does not include the money needed for human vaccines. The money needed for vaccines will be handled by WHO separately.

The meeting will be attended by 89 countries. People who will attend include donors and also delegates of more than 20 international organizations.

The creator of the tamiflu vaccine, Roche, has pledged a second donation of Tamiflu. They already made a donation of 3 million pills and plan to donate 2 million more. The donation is for preparation in case a pandemic does occur.

It has been estimated that a year long pandemic of bird flu will cost the global economy $800 billion. The World Bank itself has helped, approving $500 million to help reach the $1.2 billion goal.

This threat may or may not materialize. But we should just be thankful for the people who gives a concern of the potential threat this virus has. It does not only affect us in terms of mortality rate but you can see how much expensive it is for the world.

Bird Flu News from China

Recently, the news has reported that China has developed a new avian flu vaccine that is more efficient in protecting its poultry population against the devastating disease.

This vaccine was developed at the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute in northeast China, and is said to be the world's first live vaccine to be used against the bird flu. Scientists there spent about four years in the development this breakthrough vaccine.

This new vaccine can be adminstered several different ways, giving scientists a distinct advantage in possibly getting a handle on the spread of the bird flu. Just like other vaccines, this one can be injected; but it differs in that it can also be given orally, or nasally or conveniently by spraying.

This new vaccine may replace the current vaccine being used in China, as the former had to be injected... putting people at risk due to the proximity.

The Chinese government recently approved the vaccine for mass production, with the current cost being about a fourth of the cost of other vaccines on the market.

Experiments with this new vaccine show that it may also protect some mammals from bird flu (for example... mice). Scientists are hopeful that the techniques learned in developing this vaccine may also help to research and implement a vaccine to protect people from the bird flu.

This new vaccine is great news in the fight against the bird flu H5N1, however with recent human deaths in China, the World Health Organization and other international health bodies have asked China to provide animal samples of the bird flu virus for testing, and China has not done it. Also... there has been no cooperation between Taiwan and China for the exchange of information about the bird flu. Taiwan has said bird flu turned up in exotic birds smuggled by boat to the island from Fujian, where, at the time of writing this, no outbreaks among birds have been reported.

Thrush is not a serious disease but it can cause great discomfort for its sufferer. The best thing you can do then you think you have thrush is to see a doctor immediately. There are also many over the counter medicines that are effective in treating thrush.

But aside from seeing a doctor and using over the counter medications, there are many things you can do at home to treat thrush.

1. The first thing you should do at the onset o thrush is to clean the affected area by washing it with plain water. It is not advisable to use soaps, shower gels and bath gels because these products can worsen the infection. Make sure that the affected area is always clean, cool and dry.

2. When you have thrush, avoid using lubricants and spermicidal creams. These products can make your conditions worse. You should also avoid latex condoms because latex or rubber can cause irritation.

3. Do not let synthetic fibers or materials touch the affected area as doing so could cause further irritation. You must wear clothes or undergarments made from natural fibers so as to minimize irritation.

4. Stress can trigger thrush this is why you should learn to relax and fight stress. Do not put yourself in stressful situations as much as possible and try to learn different stress-reducing techniques.

5. Make sure that your partner does not have thrush before having sex.

6. Melaleuca Oil is an effective remedy for thrush. You can buy Melaleuca Oil at alternative medicine and herb stores.

7. Aside from Melaleauca Oil, another effective natural remedy for thrush is Aloe Vera gel which can also be bought in alternative medicine and herb stores. Apply the Aloe Vera gel to the affected area.

9. Individuals suffering from iron deficiency anemia and diabetes are more susceptible to get thrush than those not suffering from these diseases. So if you suffer from these diseases you must be doubly careful in avoiding thrush.

10. Avoid alcohol, steroids and too much sugar if you feel that you are susceptible to thrush. These substances can prohibit the growth of Candida Albicans.

11. You can also put natural yogurt to the areas affected by thrush to minimize irritation. Yoghurts have ingredients that can combat inflammation.

12. Food is one of the main triggers of thrush. Avoid dried fruits, dairy products, products with yeasts, mushrooms, pickled vegetables and fruits, monosodium glutamate and smoked fish and meat as these can trigger thrush. You can also try to follow a restricted diet for at least one month. The restricted diet can help you determine the particular foods that triggers thrush. You can then avoid these foods to avoid acquiring thrush.

13. Probiotic supplements that support friendly fungi in the gut such as acidophilus are also found to be effective in treating thrush.

14. If your thrush is persistent and does not respond to home remedies then you should begin to see a doctor. You should never ignore a persistent thrush infection. Or else it could lead to a much worse condition.

Technology Over Drugs for Stress Related Tension Disorders

As much as 95% of the population suffers from some form of reoccurring stress and tension related headaches.

Although not normally debilitating these headaches affect work productivity and add to the billion dollar cost of sick days and time off. Surprisingly one of the causes of this type of ailment is the overuse of the very medication taken to alleviate the pain (called rebound headaches).

An obvious solution to tension headaches and stress related muscle pain is massage therapy, a now rapidly growing health trend with schools sprouting up all across the country. Unfortunately not everyone has access to or can afford a massage therapist on a regular basis, or even when one is needed.

And so enters today?s high tech solution of the massage recliner. No longer the massage chairs of the past, gently vibrating you to sleep, the new age massage recliner can contain up to 12 motors and pack enough punch (literally) to work out the deepest of muscle knots, tension and stress. http://www.massage-chairs.com

The newest version of this technology comes from Premier Health Products and is called the PHP 2026 Silent Shiatsu Massage Recliner. http://www.massage-chairs.com/2026.html

With a 30? rolling back stroke this model can massage from the base of your scull to the tip of your tailbone, even for a person of tall stature.

With the ability to provide a deep tissue style tension relieving massage at anytime, users may feel pain medications, even mild ones, no longer necessary for treating stress related ailments such as reoccurring tension headaches.

Additional benefits of massage recliners, like the PHP 2026 and PHP 2022, its inversion therapy cousin, can help with; digestion, insomnia, circulation, fatigue, muscle cramping due to exertion, and Fibromyalgia.

Fast Weight Loss Is It Possible?

Is fast weight loss possible? Probably not at the rate that everyone would wish. Fast weight loss means losing at most 1-2 pounds a week and maybe 3 pounds if morbidly obese. Note that I said, at most. Any program that promotes losing 10 pounds in 10 days is simply impossible to do in a healthful manner. Often times, these quick-fix plans rely on lost water weight which will be regained immediately once one's normal diet resumes. Next time you watch a commercial for pills like Hydroxycut or TrimSpa, keep your eyes open for the fine print that reads something like, Results not typical. These companies use various ploys to trick the public into believing that the testimonials are the genuine words of actual customers and the before and after photos as being honest documentation of their transformations. Be smart and don't fall victim to this pseudo-fitness garbage being advertised, it's truly detrimental.

Myth: Targeting Fat Loss Using Exercises And Products

Another common tactic that those on the phonier side of the fitness industry also like to utilize is the perpetual flow of home fitness gadgets that with three easy payments will buy you a flatter stomach or whatnot. Since both men and women are insecure about their stomachs, those in this industry target them with various sit-up and crunch contraptions that advocate only minutes of exercise. One in particular promotes only 12 repetitions on one side and 12 more on the other to give the owner a nicely sculpted set of abs, all within 90 seconds. Impossible. You cannot work out in only 90 seconds and expect to achieve any noticeable results, especially when you are trying to isolate a single muscle group for the sake of fat loss. Furthermore, many fail to understand that ab work only leads to stronger abs, not subcutaneous fat loss, which is usually the goal of the buyer. So, don't waste your money on a product that won't give you the results it boasts to give you.

How To Lose Weight The Right Way:

The ideal path for weightloss includes a diet where your are reducing your usual daily caloric intake by 500 calories. With diet alone, one could lose a pound of fat a week just by removing a mere 500 excess calories. So instead of drinking 2 soft drinks a day and a cookie after lunch, have water instead and skip dessert. Now, couple this idea with smaller portions of lean protein and complex carbohydrates and more frequent meals so as to prevent hunger pangs. This will keep the metabolism high in order to maximize the body's calorie burning potential. As for exercise, work out three times a week and keep workouts to every other day. Also, make sure you blend the right amount of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Eat 5 meals a day, full of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, seeds, and nuts and exercise 3 times a week and you'll be guaranteed to lose weight as fast as the body possibly can, the right way!

Acne Treatment Remedies for Adults and Teens

Those who have experienced pimples on their face and torso want an acne remedy that they can use and that will work. There are lots of different products you can use. Some make outrageous, miracle claims but a few of them work to reduce the symptoms and overall appearance of acne.

It can be very difficult to make the right choice of an acne product on the market today. Most people use trial and error in their choices, trying the product for a few days then giving it up and moving on to a new one when nothing happens or worse something does happen in the form of further irritation of the skin. It can be very upsetting and expensive even though this form of trial and error does occasionally give good results.

Good research can save time. Find what?s in the product and research what it does. This will help to eliminate much of the competition. There are few acne treatments with FDA approval in over-the-counter uses and they are often used in combination with other acne fighting treatments. This helps to maximize their ability to help keep acne off your face.

Many are used in different strengths or percentages in the medications. Sulfur has been used for many years as an acne treatment. It does cause drying as part of its treatment so you may need to use some skin lotion on your face. Sulfur can be combined with antibiotics and it is considered very safe and relatively inexpensive for the purchaser. However the skin can become used to the Sulfur and will no longer react to it when applied, so the treatment is ineffective.

Benzoyl peroxide common in over-the-counter treatments and is thought to be very, highly effective in the killing of the p. acnes bacteria which causes acne. It can also dry up excess oil from the pores and overuse can lead to dry and chapped skin. A mild dosage is often just as effective as the stronger one.

Lastly Salicylic acid unplugs those clogged pores by soaking into the plug and helping to loosen it up. It?s made from willow bark. Interestingly a form of it is what makes up Aspirin. Plus the acid helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

Yoga in Practice: Projecting Happiness

We are all human, living life with its many ?ups and downs,? but how can we keep our spirits up in difficult times? There are many types of Yoga, and not all are physical styles, like the many popular Hatha Yoga sub-styles. To name one that is not Hatha, and classified as one of the nine main Indian Yoga styles, there is Bhakti Yoga - the union of love, devotion, and worship.

The principle of Bhakti Yoga is universal to all people of all religions. A person who sings, prays, worships, and helps another person is practicing this form of Yoga - whether they have heard of Bhakti Yoga or not. It does not matter what religion you are because singing, praying, worshiping, forgiving, and helping are morally right.

To quote one of the most enlightened men of the 20th century, ?The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.? - Mahatma Gandhi

Therefore, life is a daily Yoga practice, even if you do not attend a Yoga class. When you help others, you are practicing Yoga. It could be argued that you are practicing other forms of Yoga, but that is not the purpose of this article. It is more important to understand that you can help others in many ways, and it does not have to cost you a fortune.

Projecting happiness is free and does not require a lot of money. Here are some ideas that will help you to be happier, and hopefully, more worry free. Whether you are a beginner, Yoga practitioner, Yoga teacher, or Master teacher of Yoga, you should spread happiness to everyone you meet.

Listen to everyone, regardless of his, or her, social status. Let go of judgment; it makes fools of all of us. Pre-judgment is prejudice, and this is the one thing that prevents world peace. To some degree, we all have felt it, but you must discard it, suppress it, and never teach it.

You cannot listen if you are talking at the same time. The wisest and most educated person has learned that the purpose of listening is to understand; understanding is knowledge, and knowledge is power. There are times, when you cannot listen. This could be due to time restraints, the fact that you may have heard it all before, or possibly you do not consider this person?s opinion to be important.

My grandfather had a saying, ?Even the court jester can teach you something about life.? Sometimes, we take the help, or opinions of others, for granted. How many times do we seek more information in order to make the best decision? The final decisions you make, in any given situation are entirely up to you, but when you can sit back and listen, that is time for learning.

Try to avoid arguments and stay the course of peaceful co-existence. You may not always be able to do this, but you should try to improve. You could keep a log of daily situations that end peacefully and those that did not.

This is not meant to make you feel guilty, but it is a course in self-improvement.

You will then see your daily shortcomings and your success. Learn to develop your power of influence for the common good.

It does not matter who is right, especially, if your intention is to proliferate happiness. Related to this, I share one more quote by Mahatma Gandhi.

?What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?? - Mahatma Gandhi

Think about these words, and how you can make the world around you a happier place. This concept is contagious, but it has to come from within and spread worldwide.

Physical Activity: The Great Health Facilitator

Opportunities are usually disguised...so most people don't recognize them. - Ann Landers

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. - Lao-tzu

Physical activity is the best first step to health. It is the most direct way for you to discover, or rediscover, the wonder of your body. It allows you to experience vitality and provides an immediate sense of control of your body's health and well-being. In addition to having its own inherent benefits, physical activity is a great physical and mental health facilitator, and wonderfully regenerative. Your senses come alive and are attuned more delicately when you engage in regular physical activity.

There is good news about actually doing physical activity. Research has shown that one can obtain its major health benefits with a minimum amount of effort and a minimum amount of time. The old myth of no pain, no gain and of long-distance jogging as the only way to achieve meaningful health results have been put into perspective. The evidence is clear: you can enjoy the benefits of physical activity with the equivalent of walking a half an hour a day, four or five days a week.

The Institute for Aerobics Research in Texas evaluated the fitness levels of more than 3,000 people and followed their progress for eight years. While the sedentary did have a mortality substantially higher than the more fit, the principal benefits of physical activity came even after very little physical activity. Those who simply walked an average of 30 minutes a day decreased their risk of heart disease by almost half.

The American Heart Association has stated that a sedentary life-style is a risk factor for heart disease comparable to smoking, cholesterol abnormalities, and high blood pressure. It also pointed out that low-intensity physical activity, performed regularly, can lower the risk of heart disease.

Any physical exercise is better than none! Housework, gardening, shuffleboard--anything that causes us to move--is beneficial. And, the benefits are not limited to heart disease alone. Physical exercise reduces stress, improves eating habits and weight control, increases good (HDL) cholesterol, and decreases triglyceride levels.

When beginning an exercise program, choose an activity that you think will be fun. Try walking, cycling or doing aerobics with a friend, a family member or as part of a class. The company may reinforce your commitment. If exercise is new for you, begin slowly, and keep in mind that there are a host of activities that you can try.

And, for those of you who have been sedentary most of your lives, the good news is that you have the most to gain from even the simplest physical activities. Gradually work them into your daily life. Start with small, comfortable activities, for instance:

(1) Walking to your destination whenever feasible

(2) Taking the stairs rather than relying exclusively on elevators and escalators

(3) Doing more physical tasks around the house or yard.

(4) Strolling around the block, around your neighborhood, in the park, at the mall. Keep your activity comfortable, keep it easy, and above all, keep it a part of your life.

5 tips for a Healthy Juvenile Diabetes Diet

Over the last few years my own diet has changed dramatically. As someone who is blessed with a naturally slim frame I have never had to diet to lose weight, but I maintain my current healthy weight with a great diet/eating plan. In fact, if you do plan on losing more than about a stone in weight then I would visit your doctor for more tips on how to do this without risk.

To tell you that how I maintain weight is perfect would be totally wrong of me, but I can advise you to follow my steps because I know what works and what doesn't. But before I really begin I must also say that I have been brought up by great parents who taught me to eat everything, and so I do! If there is something that you don't like, there are loads of other diabetic recipes and ideas that you will eat and appreciate.

I am a student and I like to buy fresh and organic produce from where I live. I believe that this is important because it can be the most good for your body and contain more nutrients and vitamins than most supermarket produce. I like to source food from my fortnightly farmers market in town, which sells amazing meat and dairy produce and fresh in season fruit and vegetables. This is another important thing to remember, that eating fruit and veg in their season means that they will taste better as well as doing you good. I have a lot of influence from Western European cuisine (mainly France and Italy) as you will tell, but I do not profess to be a chef and everything is easy to make and very convenient.

I have read countless diet books and diabetic recipe/diet books, and I came to a conclusion that I think really works. I fused all the good things from the diets (but not from every diet) and sort of put together my own one. We will call this the Juvenile Diabetes Healthy Diet.

The rules that I would lay down are as follows:

1. Cut back on snacks and then change the type of snacks you eat.
Certainly my biggest downfall although it wasn't really apparent to me. When I first started at University, I had little or no routine which meant that filling my day was difficult and popping into the kitchen for a snack, no matter how healthy it felt, was a regular occurence. This is one of the hardest things to do for some people, but establishing a great routine is essential to great diabetes care. The types of snacks to be eating are unsalted nuts, dried unsweetened fruit, fresh fruit, fresh veg (I love fresh red pepper and cucumber), dark chocolate (richer and nicer and you only want 2 squares usually).

2. Cut back on white flour, embrace wholemeal carbs.
This is the most essential part of your diet, and the thing that can show the biggest increase in loss of weight. Some diets in fact jsut focus on this point, and are ery successful. Wholemeal (especially stoneground wholemeal) is so good for you and has so much more flavour in it that switching is much easier than you think. Most people are really surprised at the ranges you can get in you supermarket, again remember that the bread that is best for you is the one that is freshest with least perservatives or added ingredients. Also, brown or basmati rice is great with a lovely nutty texture. Wholemeal pasta is great and for your potatoes I would totally recommend the smaller new potatoes.

3. Stop drinking cocktails, start drinking wine.
Cocktails are full of sugar, colourants and preservatives. As a student I have had loads of practice at going out and not drinking cocktails, so my drink of choice is Malibu and Diet Coke if I feel I have to drink something and I make it last all night. I can then top up with Diet Coke (which has almost no sugar in it) and it looks as though I am drinking Malibu, who is to know. If you are out at a restaurant, red wine is much better than anything else you can order, (except water of course!) and it has been proven that the anti-oxidants in red wine are great for keeping a healthy heart. The recommended amount is one glass a day with your evening meal.

4. Start cooking more fruit and vegetables.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are a great way to get all the vitamins and minerals you need. And there are so many different ways in which to cook vegetables, but I find that raw is the best follwed closely by steamed. Both of these ways preserve all their natural goodness aswell. I will follow this post with another diabetes recipes post.

5. Drink more water.
I know you have heard people say this many times before, but the benefits of drinking more water are endless. A few tips on how to get more water into your day are firstly to put bottles of water at all the places you go in the house or work. So keep one in your desk, on your desk, a glass in the kitchen, the bedroom, the sitting room, etc. Try and drink all these glasses up and you will be well on your way to 8 glasses a day. The trick is to add a glass every few days or so, if you try to drink all that water in one go you won't be so inclined to drink 8 glasses again, trust me! Have a go, it's amazing how great you will feel.

Making Time For a Healthier Lifestyle

We've all had this conversation with our doctors. The physician says, It would be good if you could lose some weight and get more exercise.

Or we just know we need to do it to improve our overall health. We all know what a healthier lifestyle is, but we never get around to doing what we need to do to have a healthier lifestyle.

Change is always difficult. We have to discard bad habits and adopt new ones.

There are two key changes we have to make to get a healthier lifestyle.

1.We have to find time to exercise.

2.We need to eat a better, healthier diet.

It sounds simple, but think about it. You have to make time in your busy life to work out, buy and prepare food and how much time do you have?

The first change you have to make is in how you think about your health.

Being healthy needs to be a personal priority in your life. The changes you make actually need to be a permanent commitment. After all, the need to exercise and eat a healthy diet never goes away. It's something we need to do throughout our lives. It requires a life style change that makes living a healthy lifestyle an integral part of your daily life.

You have to stop doing something so you can start doing something better.

So think. What can you stop doing so that you have time for exercising and finding and preparing better food?

Are you motivated enough to make this decision?

Before you say no, think about what it can mean to your overall long-term health. People who get regular exercise tend to weigh less, they're stronger, they may require less medication, they may have a more active life into old age, they may experience less dementia, less diabetes, less heart disease and a myriad of other benefits.

We all have to make hard choices about what we want to spend our available time doing.

Walking, swimming and weight lifting are easy on your joints and promote muscle tone over the long haul. They don't require a lot of special equipment or coordination. You must dedicate 30 minutes to an hour to these activities every day.

It's a great opportunity to connect with a child, friend or lover who could also benefit from some exercise. Even people with health challenges or disabilities can benefit from this type of activity.

The big benefits may come with the opportunity to reconnect with important relationships at the same time.

Then get and give some more love during the preparation of healthy meals. People seem to make eating a bigger chore than it has to be or they just grab a fast food meal on the way to somewhere. Fast food is VERY BAD for people. Eat at home instead.

Purchase all your ingredients from the fresh aisles at the grocery store. For a healthy preparation method serve organic vegetables and fruits either raw or steamed along with a little protein and small amounts of healthy fats like olive oil. Be careful not to overdo the carbohydrates because they can cause excessive weight gain.

Pay a lot of attention to flavor quality and pleasure in what you eat and your companions.

Take some good supplements to insure you get enough nutrients.

Get some exercise every day with someone who needs it too.

It all has multiple benefits to your health and the emotional well being of you and your loved ones.

Health and well being are connected intimately to our emotions. Make its benefits so important to you that you will never feel motivated to skip what you need so profoundly.

Our Coenzyme Guide

If you?ve heard anything about modern medicine then you?ve probably heard the promoted benefits of anti oxidants. Anti oxidants are helpful chemicals found in nutritious foods that help eliminate cell damaging agents called free radicals. Free radicals naturally occur in the body but can be promoted by exposure to such things as carbon monoxide.

Anti oxidants are constantly being researched for their health benefits regarding such things as fighting cancer and helping to slow down the aging process.

Coenzyme is one such anti oxidant that is found naturally in the body. It is present in the majority of body tissue and is most present in the pancreas, liver, heart, and kidneys. Coenzyme is not only used by the body as an anti oxidant, but it is also used by cells in the process of creating energy. Essentially, it is needed for proteins to help speed up chemical reactions in the body.

As people get older the natural levels of coenzyme decrease, and such chemical reactions can?t take place nearly as fast. This can lead to lower energy levels as well as increasing numbers of free radicals.

By using coenzyme supplements it may be possible to slow down the process of increased free radicals, as well as improve energy levels. Because of it?s anti oxidant properties and it?s ability to help boost the body?s immune system, coenzyme is being evaluated in for various uses, including the fight against cancer.

Coenzyme supplements are widely available. You can purchase coenzyme online today, although you may wish to consult your physician before starting to take any new supplement.

Your Guide to Joining the Right Gym

Whether you want to look good on the beach this summer or lose the pounds the thanksgiving turkey puts on, a gym membership could be just the ticket.

The facilities

The beauty of a gym is that everything you need is there. You can run, cycle, row, cross country ski, swim or take an exercise class. If you want to tone or build your body there are weight machines and free weights.

When the workout is done, relax in the spa and jacuzzi. Then have a massage and beauty treatment or a luxury body shower. Both men and women can be pampered to their hearts content and it's all under one roof. When joining a gym the range of facilities is the important factor but there are other things to consider.

Other than facilities? What else?

Think about the location. Is it closer to your home or workplace and when would you plan to visit? Would you normally go at the weekend from home or on the way home from work? Will the traffic be an issue at these times? Also check to see if there's enough parking available especially at a center of town gym.

If it's classes you're after, see if there's a good range. Make sure they have some scheduled for the times you'd normally go. See how popular they are, you'd want the class to have more people there than just you and the instructor. The best way to check all this out, is to get a complimentary pass. All gyms will let you have one day, but a little persuading should get you a whole week. This will enable you to get a sense of the general atmosphere and see how busy it gets.

Negotiate the cost

So you've found the gym you want to join, now comes the payment. Nearly all gyms will want you on a 12 month contract. Then there may be a joining fee and monthly payments on top of that. All payments and sometimes the contracts are negotiable. Swing this in your favour by applying towards the end of the month. Gym managers are often paid bonuses for good monthly figures so they'll be more inclined to drop their prices to include you.

You may also be told there's a promotion or some incentive that runs out at the end of the month. Take this with a pinch of salt, there's usually a promotion every month and they're all worth about the same so you wouldn't be missing out.

Why use a gym?

Ok, running, cycling, rowing etc doesn't have to be done in a gym, they're certainly more enjoyable outside. But the weather may be bad and the only body shower you'll get will be the rain falling on your head. Whereas in the gym the spa is only minutes away.

For total covenience these places just have to be sampled. So pop down to the local gym, get a weeks complimentary pass and give it a go, you won't regret it.

Who Invented the Contact Lens?

Many believe the contact lens is a relatively new invention and was conceived in this century due to technology and innovation. While the contact of today was developed not so long ago, its inception and inspiration began many centuries ago. This probably comes as quite a shock to many; however the idea of contact lenses began with Leonardo da Vinci. In the 16th century Leonardo da Vinci made sketches of a variety of contact lens possibilities and included descriptions of them. Then, more than 100 years later Rene Descartes developed the idea of a corneal contact lens. Thomas Young used Descartes idea 170 years later and developed what has been considered the first contact lens. However, it would be in 1887 that a German glassblower would develop a contact lens that was designed to be worn and accepted by the eye. After this, the whole world began the quest to develop and improve the contact lens.

In the 1900s an American optometrist produced the first contact lens in this country and introduced the contact lens to plastic. This was a huge step and was a move away from glass contacts. The contact lens industry and technology continued to expand and grow and by the 1960s Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim created a soft contact lens of a water absorbing plastic. This development is what most inspired the majority of soft contacts today. The 1970s found this lens available to patients in the United States as well as the toric contact lens for patients with astigmatism.

The 1980s continued to see improvements and new options in contact lens wear. Soft colored contact lenses as well as extended wear lenses became available to the general public. Also, RGP lenses became available in these styles as well. Bifocal lenses also made their way onto the market. And fortunately for all contact lens wearers, the first multipurpose lens care solution became available. The 1990s continued to see an improvement on all the innovations from the ?80s and more options became available for contact lens wearers.

As you can see, there was no one inventor of the contact lens, but rather collaboration over many centuries and many individuals developing new ideas and implementing them.

Protect Yourself for the Upcoming Cold & Flu Season

There is no quick fix for the flu pandemic

If vaccines and drugs are available too late to stop bird flu, then what can be done to battle H5N1 avian influenza if it spreads to people? Not a lot, experts say. If a pandemic emerges in the coming year, there will not be enough supplies of drugs or vaccines to stop it and basic medical equipment that could slow its spread is also lacking.

Ladies and Gentlemen it is time that you take health care into your own hands. With headlines like you just read, you can see that you and your loved ones are facing one of the greatest challenge that pose a threat to mankind. You cannot rely on our current health care system or your government alone to protect you.

You have been reading about the Spanish Flu, SARS, and Bird Flu for several years now, and, frankly, at this time you should be real concerned. The threat is real, and it is darn right scary if you look at all the information surrounding this alarming problem.

You need to understand what you can do to protect yourself and your family from viruses such as the bird flu, the Spanish flu, SARS and many other flu strains. I don?t know about you, but I am not one to take a chance and think that I will be one of the few lucky ones to obtain the vaccine for this epidemic called the bird flu plague that is being predicted!

Your best defense is the human immune system. More specifically your immune system.

The human immune system is a truly amazing constellation of responses to attacks from outside the body. It has many facets, a number of which can change to optimize the response to these unwanted intrusions. The system is remarkably effective, most of the time.

The key statement is most of the time. You need to understand exactly what you need to do to support your body so that your immune system is as strong as it can possibly be all of the time not most of the time.

When functioning properly, your immune system fights disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. A strong immune system provides you with powerful natural defenses against disease. Conversely, with a weakened immune system you are more vulnerable or more susceptible to colds, flu, and more serious illnesses.

Pollution, drug overload and nutrient-poor diets compromise our immune health. Drugs aren't the answer for immune enhancement. The immune system is not responsive to drugs for healing. Antibiotics used to fight infections actually depress the immune system when used long-term.

The world is filled with disease-causing organisms; and your body is filled with natural defenses to resist them. The key to self-healing is a strong defense system, which protects you from everything from the flu germs to cancer cells.

All disease and illness in their various manifestations are a result of the failure of the immune system.

Antibiotics fight infection, but they don't affect whatever factors caused a weakened the immune system. We are designed to eat natural foods such as fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, pure clean water, plant roots, meats that have no antibiotics or growth hormones.

Over the past several years we have been exposed to commercially prepared foods, synthetic foods, foods overloaded with sugar as well as the chemicals these foods contain - chemicals that our bodies simply aren't meant to handle. Today we have more stress in our lives caused by a multitude of factors that is compromising your body's immune system responses.

Our current supply of foods are missing key nutrients that our bodies must have in order to build a strong healthy immune system. ?The alarming fact is that foods (fruits, vegetables, and grains) now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals are starving us ? no matter how much of them we eat. No man today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his (or her) system with the minerals he requires for perfect health because his stomach isn't big enough to hold them ? The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some them aren't worth eating as food ? Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our systems than on calories or vitamins or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume.? The preceding quote is from Senate Document 264, dated 1936

Recent studies suggest that vitamins and minerals delivered to the human body by fruits and vegetables may have declined as much as thirty to forty-percent since 1960.

So what happens when your immune system response is not functioning the way it was designed?

The answer is it will not protect you the way it was meant to!

If you are exposed to a flu like the Spanish Flu, SARS, or the Bird Flu and your immune system is dysfunctional you are more likely then not to contract that flu virus that you were exposed to.

The particular influenza strain that the World Health Organization fears may break out as the next pandemic at any time is called H5N1 bird flu virus. If this occurs as they fear the numbers of people affected would be in the tens of millions.

We have seen it before, where there is a shortage of a specific vaccine. If they do not have a vaccine readily available the result will be disastrous. Just imagine if this occurs, imagine this killer flu spreading around the world instantaneously through person to person in various public places, on airplanes and from city to city. Medical facilities would be overwhelmed.

How can you protect yourself from the bird flu pandemic?

By building a strong immune system. It is like a shield of armor, defending your body and protecting it from harm. That may be easy to say but extremely difficult to do. Your immune system is a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to defend your body against attacks by foreign invaders.

Good nutrition is essential to developing and keeping your immune system healthy and strong. Nutritional deficiencies may be responsible for chronic immune problems as it is easier for bacteria or viruses to take hold when important nutrients are missing.

Therefore the most important nutrients are the ones that are missing in your diet!

More than 75,000 chemicals are permeating our environment. Chemical exposures can damage the immune system, decreasing the ability to fight off common infections, viruses such as the bird flu and other serious diseases such as cancer.

Things you can do to strengthen your immune system; A well balanced nutritious diet, specific food supplements, good clean purified water, a healthy mental attitude and emotional well-being, a nontoxic environment, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics and vaccines, low stress, and plenty of rest and exercise.

A strong Immune System will help you to fight off all manner of diseases, colds and flu's. Learn how to support your body's natural ability to balance your immune system and restore cellular wellness.

Recent science has determined the significance of a function in the human body called cellular communication. Your cells communicate information through a series of glycoproteins that cover every single cell in your body.

The significance of this discovery called glycobiology is literally how your body?s immune system functions. In other words it is the operating system of the human body.

The immune system is an extraordinarily complex system that relies on an elaborate and dynamic communications network that exists among the many different kinds of immune system cells that patrol your body though the cell surface structures called glycoproteins.

True health cannot be achieved unless your immune system is operating as nature intended. The human immune system needs specific powerful nutrients that supply your body what it needs to exhibit active defenses against infectious diseases such as the bird flu.

You have to understand that the function of cellular communication can not occur properly unless you have an ample supply of nutrients called glyconutrients so that you body can balance your immune system and restore the proper cellular communication function. Just like the other essential nutrients, glyconutrients are not readily available in your current food supply in the amounts that you require to function at an optimal level.

Discover the nutritional application called glyconutrients that supplies nutrients so your body can support the structure that facilitates cellular communication which in turn supports a strong vibrant immune system. There is nothing more important then strengthening your immune system

Beverage Companies Stop Selling Sodas In Schools

A recent story bothers me more than it should, and I am not sure who the be angry at more, parents, the school boards, or the politicians. Major beverage companies like Pepsi and Coca-Cola have agreed to stop selling sodas with sugar in schools. This agreement was worked out in conjunction with the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association. On the surface, it looks good. It is attacking the problems of obesity of younger children in schools.

The problem I have with this agreement is the lack of focus on the bigger picture. Parents will complain to local school boards about the mere sight of Pepsi or Coke on a scoreboard in the basketball gym, yet forget the large amount of money Pepsi or Coke donates to help fund the sports. Are their kids so weak-willed they can not make an actual choice not to drink the soda? Mom and Dad must not have done a good enough job educating children on nutritional choices.

I think the bigger problem is the lack of physical education classes in all levels of schools. Kids are not getting as much movement today as they were 10-15 years ago. When I was in high school, (graduating class of 1987) we had Pepsi machines. Sometimes I bought a refreshing Mountain Dew after class, and sometimes I did not. What I do remember is that I had P.E. every day, and always had something fun to look forward to, whether it was a new skill, or an in-class soccer game, or running a 12 minute mile. Reviewing back further, I had P.E. every day in junior high and elementary school. My daughter on the other hand has P.E. twice a week, and has to pay expensive fees for any sport or class she wants to try.

Parents have to pay through the nose to get their kids involved in a sports league, or pimp out their children to sell products. My daughter had to sell chocolate bars as her fundraiser. Wait, I thought sugar was bad. Hmm, selling candy must be OK because there is no school involvement. Where is the Clinton Foundation to assist the activities portion of obesity? Using my daughter as a reference, she had to pay a $75.00 sign up fee for softball. Seems reasonable for field rent, I suppose. The fee covers a uniform top. She has to provide her own bat, glove, pants, socks, and shoes, which will add another $100-$150.00, depending on how cheap you can find the supplies and equipment. Next, she must sell $40.00 worth of candy. What about the parents who can't afford something simple as a team sport? Where are the politicians for them? Run this fundraising problem up to the high schools, and you can see where the money raised by Coke and Pepsi come in handy, and should be welcomed by the short-sighted board members and parents.

The Role of First Aid in Angina and Heart Attacks

Angina vs. Heart Attack

In angina one of the coronary arteries hardens. This essentially means that sufficient deposits of fat have built up in an artery to prevent the tissues on the other side of the narrowing from getting an adequate supply of blood. When one of the coronary arteries becomes hardened the blood supply the feeds that part of the heart is reduced so that the heart muscle as a whole has to work harder. This in turn causes pain in the chest, which can spread to the neck, jaw, shoulders, and arms. This pain is called angina. It is normally controlled by prescription medications.

A heart attack is caused when the heart's muscle tissue dies because the oxygen-rich blood supply is cut off. This is usually caused by a blood clot, which gets stuck in a narrowed artery. If enough of the heart tissue is affected then the heart will stop. This is known as cardiac arrest.

In either case the casualty could describe the pain as a heaviness, tightness, or squeezing. They may also just complain of sore arms, an aching jaw, or simply indigestion. Other symptoms may include: denying anything is wrong, fear, pale skin, nausea, vomiting, sweating, shortness of breath, fatigue, shock, unconsciousness, cardiac arrest. (St. John. 5-5. 1996).

There is no way a first aider can determine if a casualty is suffering from angina or a heart attack. Only a doctor can determine this. Because of this the treatment is the same in both cases as far as the first aider is concerned.

Treatment

  • Inform casualty you are first aid trained, and ask if you can assist them.
  • Everybody has the right not to be touched by others. When you are offering first aid this must be respected. You should always identify yourself as someone who is first aid trained, and then ask if you can help.

Once you have asked the casualty, they can say Yes or otherwise indicate their consent, or they can do nothing, but not prevent you from assisting. If a member of the casualty's immediate family is present they can also give consent. If the casualty is a child, and their parents are not around then you can also proceed. In all these cases you have consent or implied consent to assist.

The casualty also has the right to say No, which may sound odd, but they may have reasons, which you must respect. If this is the case make them comfortable if they allow it, and tend to others if necessary.

  • Call for medical assistance
  • When you recognize the signs and symptoms of angina or heart attack you should call for medical assistance, or have a bystander call for assistance. In today's world where most people carry cell phones this shouldn't be a problem, if however you have to leave the casualty make sure they are at rest first.

  • Put casualty in resting position
  • By putting the casualty in the resting position you reduce the work that the heart has to do. The resting position has the casualty lying on their back, with their head and shoulders raised, and their legs bent at the knees and raised. It is also preferable to cover then with a blanket, coat, etc. to keep them warm.

It is possible that this position may increase the pain so try different positions, but don't delay calling for medical assistance.

  • Make sure casualty is comfortable
  • The best way to make a casualty comfortable is to loosen tight and restrictive clothing around the neck, chest, and waist. Also reassure the casualty as this will cause them to relax and this therefore reduces the work the heart has to do.

  • Assist the casualty to take their medication
  • If the casualty knows they suffer from angina, they likely will carry their medication with them. If the casualty is conscious and specifically asks for your assistance then proceed to do so. In any case always follow the instructions on the container, which includes ensuring the medication is for this patient, and ensuring the medication is administered in the proper way. For example nitroglycerine tablets must be placed under the tongue, not swallowed.

  • If breathing stops start Artificial Respiration (AR). If pulse stops start CPR.
  • It is not the purpose of this article to teach you either AR or CPR, as both require hands-on training and practise. While no specialized equipment is required for either of these procedures equipment is available to assist you in training and practicing in the form of face shields, CPR training manikins or dummies, and training devices.

    Conclusion

The role of a first aider when encountering a casualty suffering from either angina or a heart attack is primarily the same. Extensive training is available through local chapters of the St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, and other organizations.

Trouble Sleeping? Try A Few Of These Tips

If you are having a hard time falling asleep at night, you don?t have to grab for some sleeping pills, be it over the counter stuff like Tylenol PM, or prescription medication.

There are quite a few natural things you can do to improve your sleep. Give a few of them a try and see if you don?t start sleeping like a baby.

    Get Up Earlier
You may be tempted to sleep in after not being able to go to sleep in the first place. Avoid the temptation. It will only get you in the habit of not going to sleep at night and then needing to sleep in again the next morning. Tough it out and you?ll be more likely to go to sleep at a decent hour the following night, getting the rest you need.

    Eat Healthy
Eating healthy will help you sleep better. Above all avoid fatty, greasy foods at night and don?t eat anything heavy or large amounts of food in the few hours before bedtime. It is much harder to fall asleep with a full stomach and if you do manage to fall asleep you are more likely to have nightmares or wake up.

    Get Some Exercise
If you are having trouble falling asleep, incorporate some simple exercises like going for a walk around the block or doing a few push ups and sit ups in front of the TV. The exercise will wear your body out, while pumping plenty of blood and endorphins through your body. Don?t exercise right before you go to bed though. The elevated heart rate you get during and immediately after working out will keep you from going to sleep. Allow your body to ?calm down? for at least 2 hours before calling it a night.

    Fresh Air
Fresh air seems to work well for getting you to sleep. Get plenty of fresh air during the day, by working in the yard or going for a walk. Then try sleeping with an open window for even more fresh air all through the night.

Stop Caffeine Early In The Day
Caffeine has a stimulating effect ? that?s why we drink coffee in the morning to wake up. If you are having trouble falling asleep, skip the caffeinated drinks ? including most sodas, tea and coffee ? after lunch. That should give your body plenty of time to get the caffeine out of the system, allowing you nod off into dreamland.

    Skip The Nap
If you didn?t sleep much or not at all the night before, you may be very tempted to catch a nap during the day. It may make you feel better at first, but you?ll be even more likely to toss and turn the next night. Try making it through the day without a nap and lay down at your regular bedtime. You?ll be more likely to get back into a regular sleeping schedule if you skip the nap.

    Adult Acne

Adult acne (also called ?rosacea?) is a common inflammatory skin disorder that tends to arise between 30 and 50 years of age. It is a disease of uncertain etiology and is more likely to affect faired skinned persons.

The basic adult acne lesion, called the comedo, is a sebaceous follicle plugged with sebum, tiny hairs, dead cells and sometimes bacteria. Closed comedones with some pathological changes in pilosebaceous duct (hypercornification of the duct) are called whiteheads. Open comedones that present when whiteheads reach the skin?s surface and touch air are called blackheads. Their black color is not dirt, but the melanin (skin pigment) that accumulates in the opening of the oil gland. Other troublesome acne lesions can develop such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Papules and pustules are blockages of oil glands that are inflamed. Papules are red lesions (pimples). Pustules are pimples topped by pus-filled lesions that are usually red at the base. Nodules are large, painful, solid lesions that are deep-seated within the skin. They may develop additional infection and have the potential to produce long-term scarring. Cystic acne is considered the severe acne form. They are tender, sensitive, deeper, painful, pus-filled lesions that cause scarring.

The goals of adult acne treatment should include clearance of acne, prevention of scarring and, morbidity minimization. Patient education is the first and at times the most crucial step for effective acne treatment. It is essential to dispel myths that consumption of greasy food, potato chips, sugar and chocolates are responsible for the development of acne. The patient must be advised to cleanse the skin gently and use a non-comedogenic moisturizer. The patient should also avoid picking and rubbing the skin and using scented or harsh skin products. Other important preventive measures should include use of proper shaving technique and being consistent with the skin care regimen. Drinking more water can also help skin stay healthy. Evidence states that modification of the testosterone dose; dosing schedule or delivery method helps improve acne symptoms.

Patients with mild to severe adult acne form can be treated with topical or oral medicines. Although systemic therapy is mainly used for treatment of severe form of adult acne, it is sometimes needed for moderate cases. A variety of systemic agents used to clear adult acne include interlesional corticosteroid injection, isotretinoin, oral antibiotics (tetracycline and erythromycin) and oral contraceptives.

Azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, erythromycin, and sodium sulfacetamide are the prescription topical antimicrobials used to treat adult acne in the United States. Several types of prescription topical retinoids used to treat adult acne include adapalene, tazarotene, and tretinoin.

Free Samples of Contact Lenses: Free Giveaways or Shameful Promotions?

So, you are looking for free samples of contact lenses? Perhaps you saw a commercial that said visit our website for a coupon to receive free samples of contact lenses. Or, see your eye care provider today for your free pair of so and so lenses.

While this a great way for lens manufacturers to have you try their brand of contact lenses, most contact lens fitters do not require such coupons.

In order to get free samples of contact lenses, that particular lens must still be fit to your eye. Therefore you must still visit your eye care specialist. A properly fit soft contact lens must center correctly, move slightly with a blink, match the contour of your eye, and correct your vision. Any lens that does not meet all those minimum criteria does not fit. So why bother with some free samples of contact lenses that won't work for you?

Here is a secret the other websites and commercial advertisements might not be telling you: You don't need a coupon to get free samples of contact lenses.

If you are having issues with your current lenses, or have never worn lenses before, your specialist will fit you with something different. Depending on the type of fit, your lens fitter may have diagnostic lenses in the office for evaluation. If the diagnostic contact lenses are a good fit, chances are you can take them home to try out (yes, even without a coupon).

There are some instances where free samples of contact lenses can not be handed out. For example, if you do not wear a pre-packaged, disposable contact lens. Non disposable lenses are not given to eye care providers as diagnostic tools and therefore will need to be ordered per case. Also, gas permeable contacts can not be given out as free samples. Every gas permeable contact lens is made per specs for an individual patient; therefore it would not be possible to have free samples on hand.

So you can search out coupons for free samples of contact lenses, or you can let your specialist decide which lenses might be a better option for you.

Ayurvedic Nutrition: Let Your Food Be Your Medicine

It is ironic how something as obvious as nutrition has become overlooked in the modern health care system, and how in the name of convenience our fast paced society has given way to fast foods, microwaves, quick fix medicines, and eating on the run. Fortunately, there is a growing focus in the important role that nutrition plays in maintaining good health. In Ayurveda, India's ancient science of life, health and longevity, food plays a prominent role in promoting health and is therefore considered medicine.

Dating back over five thousand years, Ayurveda is still a highly respected form of health care in India today. According to this holistic system, everyone has a unique constitution or prakruti?an individual combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics determined by many factors surrounding the time of conception and birth. Disturbance of this balance due to emotional and physical stress, trauma, improper food combination and choices, as well as seasonal and weather changes may lead to imbalance and eventually to disease. If we understand how such factors affect us we can take appropriate actions to minimize their effect and eliminate the causes of imbalance. In this sense, the path toward health is always individual. There is no single approach that is right for everyone, whether it relates to diet, lifestyle, exercise or the use of medicinal herbs.

According to Samkhya, the philosophical foundation of Ayurveda, creation expresses itself through the five elements?ether or space, air, fire, water and earth. These elements manifest in the body as the three governing principles or humors called doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Everyone has all three of these doshas to varying degrees, although one and sometimes two tend to be predominant and the other(s) secondary. In balance, the doshas promote the normal functions of the body and maintain overall health. Out of balance, they create mental, emotional and physical ailments.

Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement and is made up of the air and ether. By nature it has dry, light, mobile and cold qualities. When aggravated, it can cause flatulence, constipation, tremors, spasms, asthma, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well many neurological problems.

Pitta represents the fire and water elements of the body. It has mainly hot sharp and oily qualities. Pitta disorders include hyperacidity, ulcers, skin eruptions, chronic fatigue, Crohn's disease, colitis, gout and numerous inflammatory disorders.

Kapha is made up of earth and water, and is associated with heavy, cold, damp and static qualities. Out of balance, kapha can cause obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, edema, asthma, tumors and a variety of congestive problems.

Aggravation of the doshas can affect the digestion and can create toxins, or ama from poorly digested food. As ama accumulates in the tissues and channels of the body it slowly but surely affects the flow of prana (vital energy), immunity (ojas) and the cellular metabolism (tejas), eventually resulting in disease.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, one of the main keys to maintaining optimal health as well as to support the healing process is to help the body eliminate toxins and to reestablish constitutional balance. To achieve this, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition through proper food choices, food combining and cooking methods, as well as herbal nutrition, all based on the specific needs of the individual and any current imbalance of the doshas.

Ayurvedic nutrition is a vast topic that takes into account the individual constitution, the medicinal value of culinary spices, the theory of shad rasa (or six tastes, which should all be present for a meal to be balanced), and more. As I mentioned before, in Ayurveda food is considered medicine. Likewise, herbs are also used for their nutritional and nourishing qualities, or to counteract any doshic imbalance and toxin formation as a result of poor digestion.

For optimum nutrition, care should be taken to insure that food be organic, fresh and whenever possible locally grown. In Ayurveda food, drinks, and spices are categorized according to their taste (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent), the energetic effect they have on the doshas, as well as their post-digestive effect on the tissues. This is why when choosing foods it is important to understand our original constitution so as to eat foods that have the opposite qualities to those that are already predominant in the constitution. Furthermore, understanding the current state of the doshas is also crucial for making the right food choices.

Vata types tend to more deficient by nature and have light body frames, variable digestion and often have a tendency towards gas and constipation. Therefore, they do best eating warm, nourishing, unctuous and primarily cooked foods, and should avoid dried, cold, frozen and excess intake of raw foods. Also, they should avoid pinto, garbanzo or black beans, which are hard to digest and tend to increase intestinal gas. Vata is balanced by sweet, sour and salty tasting foods.

Pitta types tend to have strong appetites and good digestion, but have a tendency toward hyperacidity and inflammatory disorders. So they should avoid eating greasy, hot spicy, salty and fermented foods, as well as sour and acidic fruits. Pitta is balanced by bitter, sweet and astringent tastes.

Kapha types are large framed with a tendency toward weight gain, obesity, sluggish digestion, lethargy and congestive disorders. They do best on a light, reducing diet low in carbohydrates and avoiding dairy, cold food and drinks, poor quality oils and sweet treats. Kapha is decreased with pungent, bitter and astringent tastes.

Before talking about the use of spices in Ayurvedic cooking I should point out that although Ayurvedic food is traditionally Indian cuisine, it is not by any means limited to it. Also, by the same token, not all Indian food is Ayurvedic. In fact, Indian restaurant food is often overly spicy and drenched in poor quality cooking oils. What makes food truly Ayurvedic is the fact that it is selected and cooked according to the specific needs of the individual, or that it is balanced for all doshas.

Many of the spices used in Ayurvedic cooking such as turmeric, ginger, cumin, fenugreek, coriander and cardamom, amongst others, are also medicinal herbs used in Ayurvedic herbology. Cooking daily with those spices can greatly enhance digestion, absorption and assimilation of food, improve one's appetite and elimination, nourish the internal organs and prevent doshic imbalance. Spices also provide a harmonious blend of the six tastes. Taste is medicinal and is the first form of nourishment. A meal containing a balanced blend of the six tastes, aside from being more appealing to the tongue, is also more digestible at a deep cellular level.

Modern research is now validating the benefits of many of the herbs and spices used in Ayurvedic cooking. Turmeric for instance, is highly effective in the treatment of type two diabetes, skin diseases, infections and hepatic and inflammatory disorders. Cumin, coriander, fennel, nutmeg and cardamom are extremely helpful in the treatment of a wide variety of digestive complaints, as is ginger for the treatment of respiratory congestion, fevers and colds. There are literally thousands of medicinal uses to such spices. Even today in much of rural India the wisest doctors are often the mothers and grandmothers who know the uses of their ?kitchen pharmacies.?

Another vital aspect of Ayurvedic nutrition is proper food combining. In Ayurveda not all foods are compatible. Certain foods when eaten of cooked together can disturb the normal function of the digestive fire and promote the accumulation of ama (toxins) in the body. Various factors, such as the tastes, qualities, and energies of certain foods, as well as how long they take to digest, affect how well certain foods will combine. Heavy foods such whole grains, dairy, meats and starches don?t combine well with light foods such as fruit, which digest quicker. Another example, when sour and acidic fruits are combined with milk, which is sweet and cooling, this causes the milk to curdle and become heavy in the intestines. Ayurveda places great emphasis on the art of food combining.

Ayurveda encourages us to take responsibility for our health as much as possible by making appropriate changes in diet and lifestyle. What we eat and how we live on a daily basis can be our strongest allies in restoring and maintaining health. All other therapeutic measures will be strongly supported by this daily effort.

Along with a balanced diet, incorporating other healthy habits into a daily routine can prevent imbalance at its very root. A lifestyle that integrates regular eating and sleeping habits will bring discipline and help maintain the harmony of the doshas, thus promoting overall good health. An Ayurvedic clinician can provide dietary and lifestyle guidelines, as well as herbal nutrition, more specific to the individual constitution, doshic imbalance and situation of each person.
